In Cyprus, the retail prices for fruits and vegetables have experienced a significant increase, with some items doubling in cost within a year. The Ministry of Agriculture's e-kofini platform highlights the disparity between retail prices and those suggested by producer organizations, noting substantial hikes in the cost of bananas, red peppers, cherry tomatoes, green peppers, zucchinis, cauliflower, cucumbers, and onions.
Bananas, notably, are retailed at an average of 1.35 euros per kilo, a stark contrast to the 50 cents producer price. The government has not intervened to address the price discrepancies, despite the evident gap. Retail prices for red peppers and cherry tomatoes have surged by 147 percent and 143 percent, respectively.
