Citrus NZ has announced the commencement of the harvesting season in New Zealand, with a variety of citrus fruits including limes, Satsuma mandarins, Navel oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and tangelos now available. This season is anticipated to markedly contrast with the previous year, which saw significant impacts from Cyclone Gabrielle, particularly in Gisborne, where a substantial portion of the country's citrus is cultivated. The improved weather conditions, characterized by a warm summer on the East Coast and favorable growing conditions in Northland, are expected to contribute to the exceptional quality of this year's produce.
Wayne Hall, Chairman of Citrus NZ, highlighted the anticipated high volume and excellent quality of Satsuma mandarins, attributing this to the favorable summer conditions. He emphasized that the eating experience of mandarins and Navel oranges would be notably enjoyable this year. The quick transition from tree to store, typically within a week, ensures the freshness and vibrancy of New Zealand-grown fruit.
Despite the known benefits, current consumption levels in New Zealand fall short of the recommended daily intake, with a significant portion of the population not meeting the guidelines for vegetable and fruit consumption. The new citrus season presents an opportunity for New Zealanders to increase their fruit intake and enjoy the health benefits of fresh, high-quality produce.
