Brazilian nut exporters hope to regain lost market in Europe and US

Since the beginning of the year, the Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments (ApexBrasil) has been actively working to enhance the reputation of Brazilian nuts on the international stage, with a strategic focus on directing at least 50% of the sector's exports towards end consumers in markets such as the United States and the European Union. Currently, a significant portion of Brazil's nut exports, approximately 50%, are sent to Bolivia and Peru.

André Müller, ApexBrasil's agribusiness manager, noted a shift in export destinations over the years. "In 1997, about 85% of the nuts Brazil exported went to the United States and Europe, but today their share corresponds to 30% of our exports, with 50% going to Bolivia and Peru," Müller stated. He further explained that the nuts sent to Bolivia are primarily for re-export purposes rather than local consumption.

Brazil ranks as the fourth largest exporter of shelled nuts globally, following Germany, Peru, and Bolivia. However, it leads in the export of unshelled nuts, with a total of 8.5 thousand tons in 2022, outpacing Bolivia's 1.9 thousand tons. Data from DataLiner highlights the leading Brazilian ports in nut exports for 2023.
