The European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) flagged two consignments of vegetables from Macedonia for containing chlorpyrifos, a pesticide prohibited in the EU since 2020 due to its genotoxic potential and developmental neurotoxicity.
The implicated shipments, consisting of mixed salad and carrots, were intercepted at the Croatian border, intended for the Croatian market. The presence of chlorpyrifos, known for its adverse effects on neurological development and potential to harm unborn children, raises concerns regarding food safety and compliance with EU regulations.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in monitoring and enforcing pesticide regulations within the EU's food trade network. Additionally, the detection of chlorpyrifos in agricultural products from the region is not isolated, with similar findings reported in Serbian peaches. The EU's stance on chlorpyrifos, banning its use in plant protection products, reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the integrity of the food supply chain.
