Georgian nut exports: a competitive landscape with no single entity dominating

The Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency (GCCPA) has been closely monitoring the nut market, unveiling a shift in export dynamics in its recent interim report. The report highlights a peak in nut export volumes in 2021, reaching 365.6 million GEL, before witnessing a downturn in the subsequent years, with figures dropping to 276.8 million GEL in 2022 and further to 218.2 million GEL in 2023.

An analysis of the market concentration reveals a competitive landscape with no single entity dominating. The combined market share of the top five companies did not surpass 47%, indicating a low concentration and the absence of a dominant market player. This scenario fosters a healthy competitive environment, devoid of any group dominant position that could potentially skew the market.

Nut exports, including both scrubbed and unscrubbed varieties, play a pivotal role in Georgia's trade, particularly cracked nuts which represented 68-81% of the total exports from 2020 to 2023. Europe remains a critical market, with Italy and Germany accounting for 32% and 20% of the exports, respectively. Despite the fluctuation in export volumes, Georgia's nut market demonstrates resilience and competitiveness, bolstered by the GCCPA's commitment to ensuring transparency and fair competition.
