Nigeria: Cashews prominent as export commodity

Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, said cashew has assumed a prominent position amongst Nigeria’s commodities exports. He has advised that the value of the exports lies mainly in processed cashews - and not the raw nuts.

Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara said the state was ready to take a leading role in the production of cashew and that it was possible to grow the nuts in each of the state's 16 areas.

Governor Ahmed, who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed, explained that due to cashew’s high revenue-yielding potentials and short maturity period, the crop had long assumed cash crop status in the state.

The governor said the state’s current effort to ensure the speedy completion of a cargo terminal would further boost cashew export as private partners develop interest in the cashew export business.
