Chile: First laws on chemicals welcomed, but more needed

Use of agricultural chemicals is widespread in Chile, and pose a risk to farmers who handle them. In response the agricultural ministry has recently (December 19th) banned import, export and sale of several of them, including chlordecone, alfa-HCH, beta-HCH, pentachlorophenol , endosulfan, alachlor and aldicarb.

Since 2008, the Alliance for a Better Quality of Life, an umbrella group of social and rural organizations, has campaigned to prohibit the use of the insecticide Endosulfan, because of its high toxicity. The chemical, which has been banned in some 80 countries, can even contaminate a mother’s breast milk and pass to children.

Whilst this is a welcome advance there are many chemicals still not covered by legislation and the alliance continues in its work to raise awareness of this and to press for stricter controls.
