US: Obama plan for school meals unhealthy for economy
However, there are some people unhappy with the plan. It was in fact supposed to be unveiled a year ago, but was put back due to opposition over the costs. It is estimated that the states will have to pick up a bill of $7 billion for the implementation of the changes.
Arizona Senator, Rich Crandell, said that he accepted that the plans would make school meals more healthy, but he is concerned over the costs. "The problem is they are mandating these new standards with no new funding to back it up." Arizona is considering changing state law so that it is not forced to accept the national law in regard to school meals.
