Peru: Blueberry is La Libertad's most exported agricultural product
Blueberry, a delicious fruit that contains many nutritional and medicinal properties, was the most exported product by the agribusiness firms operating in the Special Project of Chavimochic (Pech), in the region of La Libertad.
According to a report from the Economic Research Unit of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), blueberry shipments abroad amounted to 185 million dollars, surpassing exports of canned asparagus, which totalled 93.1 million dollars, and avocado exports, which amounted to 81.8 million dollars.
The head of Economic Studies of the BCRP-Trujillo, Ivan Fernandez Cosavalente, estimated that blueberries would continue to lead Pech agricultural exports in 2017, and that exports of this fruit would exceed the 200 million dollar mark.
Fernandez Cosavalente provided this information in the framework of the Inflation Report and Recent developments in La Libertad's economic activity, a conference organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Production of La Libertad (CCPLL) and BCRP.
According to the report of the Central Bank, the United States remains the main destination for agricultural exports of the companies operating in the Pech, with 40.8% share.
It also highlights the growth in shipments to the UK in recent years, thanks to blueberry exports; a flagship product that has also boosted the creation of jobs in Chavimochic.
