Daniel Briso, Argofruta:

"Difficult season for Brazilian limes"

The Brazilian lime season is underway, but so far it has been quite a difficult one because of bad weather conditions. In any case, Daniel Briso, of Argofruta, believes that the worst is already over.

Argofruta produces and exports limes all year round, although its peak season runs from December to July, with a peak between January and March. "We currently have about 300 hectares devoted to lime production; 35% of our fruit is for the domestic market and the other 65% is exported," explains Briso. In Brazil, limes are widely used for sauces, or as a beverage. "In some markets, like Europe, it is considered a more exotic product," he adds.

Brazil's main market, by far, is Europe, followed by the Middle East, which, according to the producer, is growing year after year, and Canada, which is a good alternative market whenever Mexico's supply is not large enough. The United States, because of its phytosanitary restrictions, is not open to Brazilian limes.

As for the increase in its quota in the Middle East, Briso simply believes that they are filling a market gap left by Asian products, especially Vietnam.

Briso acknowledges that it has been a difficult season for all producers and exporters due to the impact of the frequent rainfall in January and February, coinciding with the peak in production volumes, although he is optimistic about the future. "Now that rains appear to be over, I believe things will go better in the coming months."
