An alternative to self-adhesive paper labels

EU: New regulation approves laser etching on fruit

The Commission Regulation (EU) number 510/2013, amending Annexes I, II and III to Regulation (EC) number 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the use of iron oxides and hydroxides (E 172), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (E 464) and polysorbates (E 432-436) for marking of certain fruits, was published on Monday in the Official Journal of the European Union.

LaserFood, a leading Spanish firm in the sector of technology for the identification of food units through laser etching, welcomes these changes, which green-light and recognise the latest advances made in fruit information marking.

"This law explicitly approves LaserFood's innovative developments, allowing the etching on the fruit's peel of all the information that can be of interest, both for distributors (supermarkets) as well as consumers. This technology can be used as a substitute for traditional paper labels, as covered by annex II," states Jaime Sanfelix, manager of LaserFood

In addition to becoming an alternative to self-adhesive labels, it also limits the risk of losing or mixing food products, making transport and storage easier. For this reason, it can also be useful to indicate PLU and QR codes, as well as a barcode.

The new regulation will come into force on 24 June and will apply to all EU member states.
