Mexico: 3,000 hectares of plantains affected by Black Sigatoka

The disease known as Black Sigatoka affected 3,000 hectares of plantain plantations, causing the loss of 1,000 tonnes, which entails huge financial losses, according to the plantain producer from Ejido de San Bartolo, Roberto López Molina.

The grower mentioned that plantains are currently being sold for 4,000 pesos/tonne, which is a low price. However, plantain producers have no choice but to sell them at that price to be able to cover the investments made in their plantations.

López Molina pointed out that it is a shame that federal and state governments are not giving support to the sector, especially in this area, which is one of the world's largest plantain producers.
