Spain: Gang of theives kill watchman in field of oranges

A Bulgarian who guarded a field in Cheste (Spain) died last night as a result of being shot by a group of men he had driven away hours earlier, after having caught them trying to steal oranges.

The deceased, a 40 year-old resident of the township, was with another fellow countryman, both hired by the owner to monitor the fields of orange crops during the weekend, since, lately, they were being robbed. The incident happened near the road, which links Cheste with Loriguilla.

According to the testimony given by the victim's partner, yesterday at noon, the two guards had surprised a group of people, all of them Spanish that were travelling in a van, when they were allegedly trying to steal oranges in the field. The guards chased them and prevented the theft. Hours later, what seemed like yet another robbery attempt would end tragically. Around 6 pm, the two guards saw a van with four men aboard. Everything indicates that it was the same group of thieves that had tried to loot the fields in the morning. Their intentions, however, were very different on this second occasion.

One of the men haughtily approached the guards and snapped: "Now I can get a bag of oranges?"

Far from being a show of bravado, the alleged perpetrator displayed a gun, pointed it at the guards and opened fire as they were trying to reach safety. According to the only eyewitness, the man shot at least four times. At least one these shots hit the guard in the back. Then they fled at full speed.
