The cold weather is the reason for the small strawberry consumption. The Spanish season started later, but has problems getting started. Spanish exporters say, that prices are alot lower compared to the same time in previous years.
Especially the weather conditions play a role, but also the Fruit Logistica and the holidays have thrown a spanner in the works. In Spain after a few days of nice weather with temperatures above 20C a lot of strawberries were sent to the market, but this caused a sudden decrease in price.
Competition in the market is almost non-existent. Moroccan strawberries go mainly to France and the volumes of the Dutch strawberries are not as yet on the market in sufficient quantities. The Egyptian strawberry season is just about to end. According to the exporters the conditions for a worthwhile recovery are definitely present. Only the retailers must get used to higher prices.
