NZ: Heatwave produces bumper apple crop
Royal gala apples grown in Stanthorpe have made their way into local stores.
So great is the crop that they are selling for about $1 a kilogram at Coco's at the Hooper Centre.
Apple grower Brad Fankhauser's family has been growing apples for more than 120 years.
"This season's apples are very high quality," he said.
"Plenty of sun has helped to develop good colour and the heat waves that we've experienced across the country have boosted sugar levels which ensures exceptional flavour.
"We now just need to keep an eye out to prevent sunburn on those extremely hot summer days.
"In particular, the royal gala crop is nicely consistent in size and exceptional colour. Aussie galas will be great eating this year."
