Spain: Citrus and vegetables, most affected by the storms

ASAJA-Almeria is showing solidarity with those affected by the torrential rains last Friday, and especially with the relatives of the victims. The serious consequences of the storm are still in everyone's mind in Eastern and South Eastern Spain. Growers and farmers are still estimating their losses and trying to put everything back into place.

For this reason, the technical services of this agricultural organisation remain in the area to assist growers and farmers in evaluating and quantifying their losses. Unfortunately, there is little financial support, so damages must be quantified in the best possible way in order to get the regional, national and European administrations to use all the mechanisms available to recoup the losses, return normality to the area and restart the region's production chain as soon as possible.

ASAJA-Almeria has been able to confirm that the citrus and vegetable plantations in the East are the most affected crops, as well as olive and almond trees to a lesser extent. Damages caused to livestock farms are also noteworthy, particularly in those with pigs, which are mainly located in the towns of Huércal-Overa and Pulpí. This is also the area with the largest pig population in Andalusia.

In other agricultural areas, such as Los Vélez, Campo de Nijar and Poniente la lluvia, rains have not been as strong and have helped alleviating the severe drought that the area has been suffering. In the East, however, open ground crops, such as lettuce and other vegetables have been severely affected.

ASAJA-Almeria is advising affected growers and farmers to contact the organisation's technical services to evaluate their damages and assist them with the elaboration of technical and damage reports.
