Kashmir Valley organization wants to reign in owners of cold storages and controlled atmosphere stores

The Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union has voiced concerns over several issues affecting the horticulture sector. During a meeting led by Union Chairman, Bashir Ahmad Basheer, with representatives from fruit growers' associations, the need for intervention by the Lt. Governor's administration was emphasized.

Key issues included the alleged exploitation by cold storage and controlled atmosphere (CA) store owners, who are accused of imposing high fees for substandard packaging materials and forcing growers to adhere to a minimum five-month storage period, limiting their control over the sale of their apple produce. The union warned of potential protests if these practices are not addressed.

Additionally, the union highlighted the damage to fruit orchards in South Kashmir from recent adverse weather events, advocating for the implementation of a crop insurance scheme. Concerns were also raised regarding the sale of counterfeit pesticides, with a call for enhanced regulatory enforcement and punitive measures against violators.

The influx of imported apples, perceived as undermining the local industry, was another concern. The union has urged for governmental intervention to impose restrictions or high import duties on foreign apples to protect the domestic market. The union appeals for immediate action from the Lt. Governor's administration to resolve these issues and support the horticulture industry in the Kashmir Valley.
