Minimal increase of mushroom yield in 2023

Organic products account for 13 percent of the total volume

In 2023, Germany harvested 77,800 tons of mushrooms. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was a 2% increase from the previous year and, following 2021's harvest of approximately 81,000 tons, marks the second-largest yield since the initiation of edible mushroom harvest records in 2012. Compared to the ten-year average from 2013 to 2022, the 2023 mushroom harvest was more than 11% higher.

The total harvest volume of edible mushrooms in operations with at least 0.1 hectares of production area amounted to 79,800 tons in Germany. The overwhelming majority of edible mushroom production was attributed to portobello mushrooms, accounting for nearly 98% of the total. The remaining harvest comprised oyster mushrooms, shiitake, and other specialty mushrooms. 13% of the edible mushrooms (10,100 tons) were produced in operations with fully organic cultivation.

Mushroom acreage almost unchanged
The harvesting area for mushroom production remained nearly constant at 358 hectares in 2023 compared to the previous year. Compared to the ten-year average from 2013 to 2022, it increased by 15%. The total harvesting area for edible mushrooms amounted to 372 hectares, of which 14% was farmed fully organically.

The two most significant states for edible mushroom production remained Lower Saxony, with a harvesting area of 197 hectares, and North Rhine-Westphalia, with 76 hectares, as in previous years.
