Argentina's pear and apple harvest ends with 1.17 million tons

The 2022/2023 season has culminated with the largest harvest of pears and apples recorded in Argentina, as confirmed by official statistics. The effective production, i.e. the production with commercial output, reached around 1.17 million tons, a 20% increase over the previous year -more than 190,000 additional tons than in the previous year - and an 8% increase over the average of the 2019-2022 period.

Despite being a great harvest for the Río Negro and Neuquén Valley, this increase in volume did not translate into significant gains due to the low quality of the fruit, which was largely destined for the industry.

The pear's effective production reached 648,100 tons, which represents a 16% increase over the previous year and the highest production of the last five seasons. The effective production of apples stood at around 527,500 tons, i.e. 25% more than in the previous season and 5% higher than the average of the 2019-2022 period. Despite these increases, the apple harvest did not exceed the 2019/2020 season when the effective commercial production stood at more than 587,000 tons.

The reports are based on official data from SENASA and the Rio Negro Fruit Secretariat until October, marking the end of the season. However, some considerations must be taken into account in these data, such as the exclusion of the supply of fruits in the Patagonian region in SENASA's trade statistics and the limitation in the accounting of stocks in cold storage.

Despite these clarifications and possible deviations, the numbers presented show the pear and apple production trends in the 2022/2023 season.
