Germany: Lining up for Berlin’s 'Mustafa's Gemüse-Kebab'

Kebab is not exactly a rare commodity in Berlin. Doner Kebab outlets are on every corner of the street. Just one of them, however, requires you to queue in line: Mustafa's Gemüse-Kebab. But why queue when the next kebab shop is just a stone’s throw away? What is it that makes the outlet on Berlin’s Mehringdamm so special? Perhaps it has to do with internet notoriety, calling Mustafa ‘a must’ (Twitter) and ‘The best kebab in Berlin’ (google).

Mustafa's Gemüse-Kebab, it turns out, is most famous for its Chicken doner. The secret is not in the chicken itself, which tastes exactly the same as elsewhere. No, it’s in the topping. Instead of a withered bit of lettuce, customers can choose from a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. How about some toppings of mango, banana or strawberry? And The lettuce is still there, but with a garnish of mint even this order becomes something special. Thanks to this original array of fresh produce, Mustafa’s kebab has grown into a top listing in Berlin’s tourist guides.
