France: Banana plantation in the middle of Paris

Designed by SOA Architects, Urbanana is a concept to build a banana plantation in the heart of Paris.

It is suggested the construction of Urbanana would allow Parisians access to one of their favorite tropical fruits and help to reduce greenhouse emissions.

Constructed between two medium-size Parisian structures, the glass façade of the building would be entirely transparent - allowing pedestrians a clear view of the interior filled with lush banana trees.

Six floors of the metal facility will be used as planting space, complete with artificial lighting for tree development and growth. The ground floor would also house a research laboratory and exhibit area for visitors.

While the concept remains controversial, benefits of designs like "Urbanana" suggest a reduction in transportation costs, lower carbon-dioxide emissions associated with moving food over long distances and the opportunity for year-long food production.
