Riococo develops new substrate for strawberries

Riococo, a maker of growing substrates made from coconut husks, has introduced a new substrate mix. The new growing medium is made specifically to provide ideal growing conditions for strawberries.

Riococo growing substrate is made from coconut coir. The coir is cultivated and production plants are located in Kurunegala, the heart of Sri Lanka's coconut triangle, and is processed into growing substrate used by many of the world's leading greenhouse growers. “Currently it is used by world’s largest greenhouses such as Village Farms in the USA. Riococo’s custom mixes, quality, consistency, and uniformity have given us a unique position in the marketplace among other competitive products”, said Riococo CEO, Shan Halamba. The versatility of the Riococo coir substrate has created a growing demand for its use in hydroponics crop production, potting soil mixes, and cut flower production. While all products are made using coconut coir, Riococo develops different products to suit a wide variety of crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, bell and chili peppers, egg plants and variety of herbs. Riococo maintains the organic nature of the raw material from the time of the collecting the husks to the finish product.

One of the recent additions to their product line-up is the Strawberry slab. Different mixtures and blends are constantly tested, and out of that research and development process, Strawberry slab emerged. The new growing mix combines water-holding capacity with air-fill porosity to create a good balance for greenhouse strawberries. “The new strawberry mix helps growers get high yields of quality strawberries,” said Halamba. “It produces vigorous growth, healthy plants, brilliant color and excellent flavor.” The mix comes in a variety of Riococo products, including greenhouse grow bags and nursery container systems.

Riococo will be participating Fruit Focus 2012 Event in July 25th in Kent, England and GARDEX International EXPO 2012, Tokyo Japan in October 2012.
