"an absolute surplus value for the entire chain"

DQFS changing to digital inspection

The basis of a qualitative, quick and fresh trade in fruit and vegetable is constant continuity and a clear quality watch in the entire chain. In order to make quality control, inspection and reporting as easy as possible QC One developed a new online inspection and reporting system in cooperation with amongst others DQFS. The new platform makes it possible to manage quality reports online and to be examined by inspectors, growers, importers and exporters. The system characterizes itself in addition to the simple manner of use and stability by its effectiveness. This is thanks to the contribution of the final user during the development.

Thijs van Alebeek of QC One together with Jan and Stefan Droogendijk of DQFS

Thijs van Alebeek of QC One and Stefan Droogendijk of DQFS have quietly worked on the new platform for a period of two years. "The idea really came into being at the 'kitchen table' Stefan Droogendijk tells. "Thijs and I have known each other privately for some time. I knew he specialised in optimising data-information platforms and that he was involved in the development of mobile payment systems. In this way we started looking in which way his company could support us by improving information data. When inspecting and testing and reporting about fruit and vegetables an enormous amount of information, quality reports, delivery notes, inspection data, photographs and a lot more is produced. Previously this was all completed by hand, gathering, recording, feedback to the importer, the exporter, growers and others involved. Often a time consuming and extensive administrative process. We were of the opinion that this could be done more efficiently and simpler."

An innovation is the wireless connection with the camera. This works up to
25 metres and is completely self-supporting. The inspectors are not
dependent upon a local network at the location.

"The fruit and vegetable trade is never completely quiet. Therefore the immediate availability of this data is an absolute 'must' within the sector," Jan Droogendijk of DQFS adds. "The strength of the new system is also the short time after which the data is available. Both the controlling party, importer, exporter, grower or even the growers association receive the necessary information in real time."

Personal planning for every inspector

To become aware of the functions of the QC One platform we were present as guests when a shipment of South African grapefruit was inspected in the port of Vlissingen. It was striking that Jan Droogendijk with only an iPad, camera and a few measuring instruments entered the coldstore and freezing storage for the inspection of the citrus. "We can leave pen and paper at home these days. No more dirty fingers," Jan laughs. He explains what he does during an inspection. "In QC One the shipment is ready to be inspected. Then I identify the shipment and start the inspection. The iPad asks me to complete my findings one by one. I work a pallet or shipment completely. It is impossible to forget something or to leave something out by accident."

Jan and Stefan select the correct container

Stefan Droogendijk explains that the interface has been completely adjusted to the system of inspection. "The QC One platform works with us and puts the observations of a number of inspectors together. At the moment a colleague is busy with a shipment of grapefruit and hail damage is found. The other inspectors are automatically informed to be extra attentive to this," Jan emphasizes that the examination of all products are still done at growers' level. This will also remain the case. It is and remains our ambition to be able to give the entire chain from the growers feedback about the product."

Easy pallet selection

All collected inspection and examination data are finally and almost immediately uploaded to the QC One data management system. Once approved by an authorized person all data will become visible to all parties involved. This information for instance arrives at an importer's personal QC One inbox. It is possible from everywhere in the world via a browser to log onto the QC One dashboard. All information is visible here, including observations, freight particulars, inspection report and photographs.

All parties receive a personal account free of charge

A user of QC One can decide for himself who he wants to share the information with, but all data is safe and protected against unauthorised persons. Droogendijk: "The entire chain has now been better adjusted to each other and uses an uniform platform, to which far more information from other systems may be joined. It is not only surplus value for our company, but for the entire industry. The possibilities are without end!"
