Photo report fruit and vegetable traders Mabru

Wholesale market in Brussels

Mabru market in Brussels has been in existence for more than a century and about 250 growers and wholesalers offer their fresh produce there daily since 1973. More than 70 of them sell potatoes, fruit and vegetables and related products. This all takes place in hall D, E and F. The traders are present from Monday to Friday. Sales start round midnight and last till about 10 o'clock in the morning.

During the last few years the number of growers offering their own products at Mabru decreased. This is amongst others the result of the fact that there are less and less small shop owners in Belgium. The early market in Brussels is famous because of its local products and international supply and has developed into a market offering a wide assortment of products and is well-known for freshness.

Summer has started again and this is quite clear from the displays. Many have a colourful assortment with summer fruit, such as cherries, peaches and nectarines. Also melons and watermelons are present at the early market. On a recent visit, it was striking that many wanted to be photographed with strawberries, locally grown of course. The sellers were happy, that after the difficult winter the summer season started again.

In addition to fruit and vegetables, flowers and other fresh products are also offered in the various halls. Almost everything is available: meat, meat products, game and fowl, fish and crustaceans, cheese and other dairy products, general foodstuff and large consumption products, wine and other beverages, deep-frozen goods, packing products, packing and material for shop and restaurant, too much to mention.

This very wide assortment is mainly meant for small and large retail traders, grocers, supermarkets, food specialists, hawkers, buyers for communities, domestic caterers and chefs.
