Stabilizing food prices in Kazakhstan

At a meeting led by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, discussions were held on measures to stabilize prices for key food products and vegetables during the off-season in Kazakhstan. The country has seen a consistent decrease in the price index for essential food items, including buckwheat, onions, sunflower oil, and flour, for three weeks. To mitigate price volatility for vegetables in the off-season, the government has facilitated direct contracts with suppliers in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. "QazTrade" JSC, under the Ministry of Trade and Integration, has executed contracts with partners from these countries.

Through these agreements, vegetables will be imported via a "green corridor" to ensure competitive pricing by eliminating middlemen. A total of 4,000 tonnes of vegetables, comprising 2,060 tonnes of potatoes and 1,940 tonnes of onions, will be supplied by nine agricultural firms.

To prevent price surges and meet the demand across all regions, the Prime Minister has directed timely contract finalization and continuous product supply. The overall requirement includes contracting for 18,600 tonnes of potatoes, 7,200 tonnes of carrots, and 5,000 tonnes of onions, with 81,000 tonnes of vegetables currently in stock to support this initiative.
