Of all the asparagus produced by Camposol, 85% goes to Europe, of which 85% is sold in Germany. The Netherlands and Belgium are important destinations. "Germans are really fond of asparagus. We see that the demand out of season also continues to increase, causing retailers to increasingly demand extended programs. Consumers no longer just linking asparagus with spring." Surprisingly, there is no market in Peru itself for the asparagus.
The main export of Peru's asparagus season runs from November to April, but it is possible to supply year round. Sergio says that the turning point for Camposol is the Easter weekend. "Whether it occurs early or late April, our export season usually ends after the holidays." He says it's always waiting to see how the weather is in Europe. "When it's cold in the producing countries, the local season starts later and we go a little longer." According to him, the preference of the consumer is the local product.
Competition from Mexico
The production of asparagus in Peru is no longer a priority. There is strong growth in the production of Hass avocados. "Especially now that we have access to the U.S. and since Germany also recently discovered the Hass avocado, this product offers us great opportunities," says Sergio. Camposol also exports citrus, berries, mangoes, grapes and pomegranates. Peru has experienced in recent years competition from Mexican asparagus. "The country is logistically attractive for the U.S. and it's just a case of wait and see how this will develop in the future. But Mexico currently produces only green asparagus and not the white. "
