grown in Malaga (Spain)

Charentais melons, very popular in France

In the domestic market of Malaga the Charentais melon is almost impossible to find. In France it is a very popular product, but the melon is only available for just a few weeks. It looks a bit like the Cantaloupe, but has a special sweet taste. Approximately 6,000 tonnes comes directly from Malaga, the only place in Spain where it is grown. In Spain it is not really known, but French people appreciate this variety enormously. The weather conditions in France are ideal for this variety.

The company Couteleau y Gracia S.A. has long been specialized in growing and exporting the Charentais to France. The products are currently about to be exported. The coming weeks daily 15 trucks will set off for France with 20,000 pounds. The melons are grown in 400 hectares of greenhouses from different growers. They use a particularly difficult cultivation system and it is an expensive affair. To ensure good production and the right taste, a mild climate and high temperatures are needed. Planting takes place in late January and the harvest begins in early May. This year the harvest is delayed 10 days due to frost in February.
