India: Himachal apples get standard packaging

The state government of Himachal Pradesh is intervening in the packaging of apples to ensure a more effective, consistent marketing potential. The government aims to introduce standard packaging that matches global expectations.

Narender Bragta, horticulture minister said that the telescopic cartons currently being used in many cases had inherent draw backs which not only damaged the fruit during transportation but is also being packed with more fruit than it can handle.

From the coming season, the government agencies HPMC and HIMFED would provide standard universal cartons for apple packaging purposes, he said.

Private companies have also been asked by the government to adopt the new requirements to ensure that the new design is universally used.

The standard package is to be a one piece box that only allows packaging of a set number of fruits. The government has stated that growers will be trained in the use of the new boxes.

The state is one of the top apple producing regions in the country.
