Ethiopian vegetable price rises: garlic the exception

Ethiopian vegetables are amongst foodstuffs that are experiencing price rises in the country. The only exception currently seems to be garlic, which is bucking the trend and dropping in value.

Residents of Addis Ababa have been expressing their dissatisfaction over the hikes.

Green peppers have risen 100% very quickly, touching the 30 birr per kilo mark, after being 15 birr per kilo last month.

Tomatoes have also risen steeply, from 3 birr per kilo last year, they are not as 10 birr. Tomatoes last year were very stable and consistent.

Onions have also increased, though not as dramatically. last year their price value was 3 birr per kilo. this remained the case until December last year, after which they increased somewhat to five birr, giving a retail price of 8 birr per kilo.

As stated above, garlic is proving the exception. It had displayed tendencies to rise exorbitantly over the past twelve months. This time last year the price was 40 birr per kilo, rising to between 80 and 90 birr by September. However, it is now fetching 45 birr per kilo, so has returned to a price that is more usual, especially for the time of year.
