Switzerland is the biggest consumer of organic products in the world

Switzerland is the country that consumes the most organic products per inhabitant in the world, according to the figures published on Wednesday by the Research Institute for Biological Agriculture (FiBL). The country is followed by Denmark and Sweden.

In Europe, the organic market increased by 11% in 2017 and represents 37.3 billion euros [42.1 billion USD]. Germany, France and Italy are the three countries with the largest organic markets in Europe. In Switzerland, this market only represents 2.4 billion euros [2.7 billion USD], compared to 8 billion euros [9 billion USD] in Germany.

The number of organic farms continues to increase in Switzerland. In January, the Federal Statistical Office (OFS) counted 6,638 farms, half of them located in mountain areas.

Europe has nearly 400,000 organic farmers. Around 71,000 farms process organic products and 53,000 importers are active in this sector in Europe, including 548 in Switzerland.
