Peter Hobert (BUD Holland):

"Fig market grows generically"

The Brazilian fig season has started at BUD Holland. "The prospects are fine, although the season is just now getting going," says Peter Hobert. BUD Holland has been working with Euroconte in Brazil for over 40 years. The Brazilian powder free figs are mainly carried under the brand Batia, with Manaca as the second brand.

"Hard work has been done on the crop management in recent years. The trees obviously need some time to respond to this. The result is a higher yield and better quality fig. The figs are also heavier in fruit flesh level and have a higher level of brix," says Peter. "A more extensive irrigation system was also laid out in order to better weather  the dry periods."

"Western Europe is the main sales area for the figs. At the moment we offer fresh figs from Peru and Israel as well as Brazilian figs. As others like Peru are becoming more important producers of figs, the fig market is growing generically," according to Peter. The varieties from Brazil, Peru and Israel that BUD Holland works with are Purple fig of Valinhos, Toro Sentado and Autumn Honey respectively.
