Cambodia: Confirel to send large mango shipment to EU

Towards the end of the year, Cambodian firm Confirel plans to export 500 tons of keo romeat mangoes to the European Union. It will be the company’s first shipment to the EU, Cambodia’s second largest export market.

Hay Ly Eang, chairman of Confirel, said they have been working with an EU-based firm to proceed with the shipment, but he would not disclose the name of the company.

“Keo romeat mangoes are very popular abroad,” Mr Ly Eang said, adding that the company buys mango at 3,000 riel (€0.64) a kilo on average. He said they want to start shipping other fruits to the EU market in the future, including passion fruit and longan. Confirel is educating farmers to help them comply with export requirements.

According to khmertimeskh.com some 60,000 hectares of land are used to grow mangoes in Cambodia.
