Table potato market East Germany - MIO Kw 23/18

Saxony: Demand weak due to high temperatures

In German retail chains in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, old German table potatoes are still being offered from crate refrigerated warehouses. Presumably until the end of June, domestic cold goods will still be packaged. Floury cooking varieties are already partially replaced by new potatoes from Israel. Soon they will be replaced by floury cooking varieties from Spain. Hard-boiled and predominantly hard-boiling Spanish imports are already packed for the food retail trade. They are available at prices between 60 and 65 EUR/dt. The Israeli goods are being bought by the packers at prices around 55 EUR/dt. The first German new potatoes from Breisgau have arrived. The price level is 65 EUR/dt. According to the storage, Egyptian potatoes in domestic warehouses will still be packed throughout June. The first regional new potatoes will be packaged next week. Pack house sales in the month of May were not what was expected. The demand for peeled potatoes is good, at stable prices.

Brandenburg
Old German cold stored goods are slowly disappearing from the market. In part, packers only still have hard-boiling domestic variety types available. These will continue to trade at stable prices. The last Egyptian new potatoes of this year are used up. Demand and price levels for Israeli imports have picked up again. They are purchased at prices around 55 EUR/dt. Spanish new potatoes are not yet sufficiently available. The Spanish goods are traded at prices well over 60 EUR/dt. German new potatoes are expected in the 25th calendar week. Sales in the packaging business remain at low levels due to the warm weather. Field crops are in need of rain in many places. Thunderstorms have occasionally broken, which caused some damage to the potato dams. Peeled potatoes prices remain at last week’s level.

Saxony
Old German cold stored goods are still in demand. Domestic packers still pack half of the potato supplies from all three types of stocks. Residual quantities of Egyptian new potatoes are still being packed. Israeli new potatoes are on offer as well as the first Spanish imports, since this week. The subscription prices for Spanish goods are 65 EUR/dt. Demand for potatoes of the retail chains is unsatisfactory. With the high summer temperatures, consumer demand has decreased considerably. Field crops urgently need rain in many places. The peeled potatoes prices remain unchanged, at last week’s levels. There are still plenty of raw materials available, of acceptable quality.

Saxony-Anhalt
The sales of domestic cold stored goods are slowly declining. In particular, floury-boiling types are no longer available in appealing quality and are replaced by new potato imports. Stored lots from Germany will be ordered by food retailers for at least two weeks. Shipping companies still deliver storage potatoes to Poland and the Czech Republic. However, their scope has decreased significantly and the contracts have been fulfilled. With luck, there are opportunities for marketing here and there. The potato stocks in the field are still largely well developed despite dry soil. For good tuber growth, however, water is needed. The peeled potatoes prices remain at last month's levels.

Thuringia
The share of German cold store goods in the packaging business is still higher than that of imported new potatoes. Producer prices for table potatoes are kept at last week’s level. Floury cooking varieties are partly replaced by Spanish imports. Residual quantities of Egyptian and Israeli new potatoes as well as the Cypriot Allianz variety are also still in the pack houses. Demand from retail chains is weak. In these long, hot summer days, few potatoes are purchased by consumers. Especially on the light soils, field crops are being irrigated due to insufficient rainfall. Prices for peeled potatoes remain at the same level as last week.
