Chile: Drosophila suzukii detected in Maule

The Regional Minister of Agriculture, Carolina Torres, met with professionals of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) to collect background information on the Drosophila suzukii pest and to coordinate actions in the Maule region, following the recent detection of a specimen of the insect, also known as spotted wing fly, in the commune of Colbun.

The meeting included the participation of the chiefs of the regional agricultural services, Manuel Hormazabal, of the SAG, and Jose Velasquez, of INDAP. In it, the authorities discussed the specific actions being carried out by the SAG in the regulated area, i.e. 4 kilometers from the point of detection, which, among other things, include the notification to all producers in the area, an activity that is already being carried out in the sector of Rabones in Quinamavida.

They also discussed the necessary coordination actions to notify producers in the region about the insect and the preventive measures that producers must adopt, at the orchard level, to avoid the presence of the pest in host crops. They established coordinations with the regional director of INDAP, in order to raise awareness and disseminate the information through their Prodesal teams deployed in the different communes of the region.
