China: Severe epidemic strikes major garlic production areas

The 'hometown of garlic', Jinxiang County, and major garlic production areas in Henan, are about to bring large volumes of young garlic to the market. However, the severity of insect pests and plant diseases is higher than in previous years and production volumes are smaller.

Jinxiang suffered from continuous rain when new garlic was planted in autumn. After the young garlic shoots came up, it was obvious that many had died. In some areas nearly two-thirds of the young plants had died. Furthermore, in some areas the young plants suffered from root as a result of high temperatures.

Some garlic farmers stated that bacterial rot, mosaic disease, and root disease have compromised more than 80% of their garlic. Some garlic farmers even lost all of their crop. In previous years, 0.07 hectares produced 1000 kg of garlic, but now this number is down to 350-400 kg.

CCTV7 broadcasted a short interview last week. In that interview several large-scale garlic farmers expressed their view on this situation (in Chinese)
