Value of Spanish apples up 140%

Spanish apples continue breaking records and have already reached prices at origin of almost 65 cents per kilo, according to the latest national average agricultural prices published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (Mapama).

In week 15 of 2018 (from 9 to 15 April), the price reached 64.17 cents/kg; 140% more than that recorded in the same week of 2017 (26.71 cents/kg) and the highest figure of the last ten campaigns.

Only in week 15 of 2013 did the price at origin come close to the one paid this season (61 cents/kg), but since 2009, the average for those seven days has been 38.91 cents/kg.

The lower apple production in other European countries, especially in Poland, caused by last spring's frosts, or the arrival of smaller volumes from France, are some of the reasons for the upward trend recorded in Spain, as explained to Efeagro by sources from the horticultural sector.

For its part, France, with a 3% reduction in its production this campaign (down to 1.47 million tonnes), has increased its shipments to Germany by 24% (48,972 tonnes) between August 2017 and February 2018, while those to Spain (54,802 tonnes) have been reduced by 6%.
