Argentina already has an organic seed production center

The Ministry of Agribusiness of the Nation stated that the first Organic Seed Production Center in the country was already working.

The facility was inaugurated in Las Termas de Río Hondo (Santiago del Estero) and was developed through inter-institutional work carried out by the Ministry of Agricultural Industry, through the National Organic Seed Table, within the framework of the Advisory Commission for Organic Production.

The initiative addresses the production of leafy and cucurbit vegetables organic quality seeds, certified and registered by the Inase, promoting Good Practices in the production of quality seeds. 

It will also supply approximately 960 families of registered agricultural and livestock producers in Santiago. 

The Center will distribute seven thousand seed kits a year during the three seasons (spring-summer, summer-fall, and autumn-spring). Each kit will have an estimated value of 140 pesos.

"The idea is to boost the competitiveness of current and potential agro-food SMEs in the region, with a key input, such as organic quality seeds, especially for those SMEs that guide and direct their products to a niche market in continuous growth, like the organic market," the Ministry of Agricultural Industries stated.

In addition, after the opening of this center, representatives of Santiago del Estero, Tucuman, Salta and Catamarca, the Inase, and the Inta signed an inter-institutional Intent Act.

Argentina is currently one of the biggest producers of organic products in the world. According to data supplied by Senasa and the Food and Beverage area of ​​the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2017 there were 1,157 certified operators, 204,000 hectares for vegetable production, 77,042 hectares harvested, the country exported 176 thousand tons, and the internal market was growing.
