Unique plant from two different products

Erd2-Tom2 is Vegetable of the Year in Austria

The Erd2-Tom2 has been named Vegetable of the Year 2018 by Austrian growers. The 2in1 plant is home to two types of vegetables: potatoes growing underground and tomatoes growing on the surface. The unique plant is the product of refinement and came into being in 2014 after a four-year trial by the Dutch specialist Beekenkamp under the name 'TomTato' (Tomato and Potato).

For this breeding achievement, a potato and a tomato plant were cultivated and then the roots of the potato plant were connected with the shoot of the tomato plant. The plant delivers an average of about 250 to 500 tomatoes as well as about 2 kg of medium-late potatoes per season. From mid-April the vegetables are available in the Austrian nurseries.
