Joey Deen, Denimpex:

"Lime market recovers after bad start"

The lime market has been dismal in Europe lately. "It all started when prices took a sharp dip in week 7. The reason could luckily be traced. Brazil had sent more limes than in previous years. Exports from this country were up 20 - 40% in weeks 4 to 11. In the first weeks of the year, European lime consumption is usually lower. In short, it was a simple equation", says Joey Deen of Dutch import-exporters, Denimpex.

"The market is recovering at the moment. In the last few weeks, Brazilian export volumes have been lower than in previous years. Mexico sends hardly any limes to Europe. They currently have an excellent market with good prices. This is in their main sales market, the United States. There is also still limited production at this time. There are still quite a few batches of older limes on the market at the moment. These should, however, be sold within the next week or so. Then the market will return to a normal, healthy level," expects the importer.

It is expected that the Brazilian export volumes will remain stable. They might even drop slightly. The first volumes of Mexican limes will only be shipped in week 17/18. This will also only happen if prices in Europe improve. "Otherwise they will just keep sending to the United States", says Joey. "Now that it is getting warmer in Europe, consumption will increase. With the current export volumes, this will mean a hike in prices. I doubt it will reach €10 to 12 again. More feasible is €6 to 8."
