"The country needs to increase exports"

Mexico: Recommended market strategies for pineapples

Mexico currently ranks as the six biggest exporter of pineapples worldwide, but, according to estimates for the year 2030, the increase in global demand could put this country in a more advanced position, reaching an accumulated growth of almost 62%.

According to a report published by SAGARPA, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, based on the growth of the commercial demand of pineapple in Mexico's potential commercial partners, the main export destinations in 2030 will be the United States, Germany, Spain, Japan, and Italy.

Currently, the Mexican market satisfies 100% of the national requirements with its domestic production, although world imports have also increased by 38% in the last ten years. This growth has generated the need to increase Mexican exports, whose main destination has been the United States.

Recommended market strategies
SAGARPA's report includes some recommendations for producers, packers, and exporters. These recommendations include, investing in the maintenance and improvement of phytosanitary quality, initiating negotiations with other countries to set the plant health requirements required to export this product, and paying attention to the intellectual property protection schemes, such as geographical indications, collective brands, or certification brands.

This last measure is vital to position the country's high quality pineapple in the most affluent markets, but also to allocate more pineapple to the Mexican agribusiness. Therefore, the report suggests strengthening a position that prevents the implementation of unjustified non-tariff measures that would restrict Mexican pineapple trade in export markets.

The report also proposes strategies to maximize and encourage exports to facilitate the development of the national product. Some of these strategies include promoting the certification of fresh and processed products, documenting and updating the technological packages used, designing new packages that do not adversely impact canning, standardizing quality, improving soil and water use, promoting production of different varieties to diversify markets, and promoting the diversification of products, derivatives and by-products of fresh and processed pineapple.
