Frost in large cultivation zones leads to a delay

'First Spanish stone fruit probably 7 to 10 days later'

The first stone fruit supplies from Spain will probably arrive on the German market 7 to 10 days later than normal. Due to the low temperatures during the flowering season, the harvest is delayed and the first batches of apricots, nectarines and peaches will presumably be offered in German stores in week 19. Since the entire South European area was affected by these weather conditions, one must also expect a shortage of goods in the first three weeks of the season.

It was a harsh winter with exceptionally low temperatures in southern Europe. Within the Spanish national borders, the metropolitan area of Murcia -one of the most important regions producing stone fruit- was hit hardest. “Normally, from the second week of April onwards, we have fruits under plastic from Murcia and Huelva with more coming in in the third and fourth week. This year, however, we can only expect relevant quantities in the last week of April and the first week of May,” confirms a buyer and seller of Llombart Handels- und Treuhandgesellschaft mbH in Lahr.

Shifts
From May onwards, the first free-range products from Seville and Murcia usually arrive, with good availability in the second and third week of May. In this area, too, significant imports are expected in the third and fourth week of May. “In general there are less goods than usual in weeks 18 and 19, which is why prices should be significantly higher than last year. At that time, however, there was an accumulation of goods in the warehouses, with a corresponding pressure on prices.”

In general, there are also some interesting shifts within Spanish stone fruit production, says the Llombart GmbH sales department. For apricots, in recent years the Spanish acreage has been increased and there is also an increasing demand for red varieties. In the case of peaches and nectarines, the acreage has declined somewhat in recent years.
