Antonio Montes:

"Spain: "We already send mangoes to Hong Kong and Canada"

The Peruvian mango import campaign is already ending for Frutas Hermanos Montes, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler from Madrid, which will continue importing them from Mexico.

"Last year was a little complicated because of the rains, and this Peruvian mango season has been very unstable due to the effects of El NiƱo, which has had a marked influence on the fruit's quality, sizes, and volumes, which have been lower than in the last campaign," stated Antonio Montes, who works in the commercial department of this company.

"Volumes have been very unstable throughout the campaign, which has caused very strong market price changes. The unstable volumes, quality issues, and small sizes, have skyrocketed market prices up to 8 euro a box of 6 kilos, something we've been able to avoid because we working with our brand," he added.

In spite of everything, the company from Madrid, which normally sells its mango in the domestic market, both in wholesale markets and in distribution chains, has managed to import more mango and open two new distant markets, such as Canada and Hong Kong. "We made the contacts to export to wholesale markets in Canada and Hong Kong completely by chance, on a trip to Peru in search of suppliers of mango and grapes. We have gone from sending a pallet a week by plane to 7-8 pallets per week to each of these markets," said Montes.

Given the growing popularity of this tropical fruit, the objective of Frutas Hermanos Montes is to offer mango 365 days a year, by supplying themselves from various origins besides Peru, such as Mexico, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Israel, and Spain.

Antonio expects the Mexican mango campaign will be more stable. According to the importer, "even though we have a very good supplier in Mexico, in general Peru has a greater know-how in the cultivation of mango."

"The positioning of our Etnica and Etnica Gold brands help us to continue increasing sales, thanks to the way we treat our mangoes from their collection to their final commercialization. We pamper them like children," concluded Antonio Montes.
