Chile to export fresh cherimoyas to US through Systems Approach

Last week, SimFRUIT informed us about the publication of the USDA-APHIS Final Standard so that Chile can export fresh cherimoyas to the US market through the Systems Approach, as an option for the treatment that involves washing the fruit with soapy water and wax, and then having a subsequent inspection.

However, after the USDA-APHIS approved the Systems Approach for Chilean cherimoya, there is a long-term work carried out between the public and private sectors, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), the Exporters Association of Frutas de Chile AG (ASOEX) and the Foundation for Fruit Development (FDF).

The task began in July 2002, when Asoex, together with the SAG and the FDF, agreed to carry out research that would support the presentation of a Systems Approach to the US phytosanitary entity, as a replacement for the quarantine treatments that involved washing the fruit with soapy water and wax.

In 2004, the FDP presented to the USDA - APHIS an ARP (Pest Risk Analysis) and Systems Approach for risk management of the Brevipalpus chilensis. In 2006, the country made a Pilot Plan for the export of cherimoyas to the United States through a Systems Approach and a packing process that was effective in the removal of nymphs and eggs of Brevipalpus chilensis. The Pilot was made and agreed upon by the SAG, USDA / APHIS, ASOEX and the FDF. It had successful results in each of its stages and involved a total of 10 pilot shipments.

In this framework, the USDA-APHIS prepared a new ARP for the Chilean cherimoyas, which was then placed for consideration and comments. The Final Standard, which allows the entry of these Chilean fruits under Systems Approach as of April 30, 2018 to the US market was published on March 28.
