Spain: Potato moth makes 140 km jump

The Council for the Rural Environment of Galicia has started withdrawing potatoes from six warehouses in Muxía to proceed with their destruction, after the municipality was included in the list of municipalities affected by the Guatemalan moth pest.

The general director of Agriculture, Belén do Campo, called on the population to "avoid conducting any transactions with potatoes, because doing so entails great risks."

For his part, the mayor of Muxía, Félix Porto, asked the regional government of Galicia to clarify "why the control mechanisms failed" and explain "how the pest managed to make a 140 kilometre jump and appear at such a distant point. Everyone is highly concerned," warned the mayor, for whom one of the "most worrying" points is that this alert has been raised because "a neighbour reported it" and the potatoes were taken to an extension office. "It was not detected by any of the controls carried out by the government," said the mayor.
