Exciting times for Israeli Exotics

Winter is finally coming to Israel and the passion fruit plantations are thriving with good yields and high quality fruits. "We are now in a full harvest and the export swing should be able to offer the Passion Dream variety continuously all the way to May", says Nir Dahan, product manager at Yapro, Israel’s leading passion fruit exporter. "As every year, we are airfreighting the product in loose, 2 kg cartons, with extended shelf life poly bags and also in wrapped trays of counts 4, 6 and 8 pieces per tray of more advanced fruits. The class 1 minus product is exported in 500 kg bins."

The unique and extremely tasty Dessert King variety of Yapro’s Pitahaya is currently available. "The season should last until the end of March and we are seeing very good interest" added Nir. "From September, Venus and Apollo varieties will become ready for picking giving us a wide availability range of Red/Red, Red/White and Yellow/White Pitahaya."

Yapro is well known for its Israeli root vegetables and recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Yapro is now fully accredited for BRC AB for the whole range of products, including leading exotic products, one of them being Kumquat. "The Kumquat season will soon come to a close and we think the demand will drop towards the end of January, but product is still available", commented Nir. The prickly Pears (AKA Cactus figs) are available during most of the year but the peak of the yield volume is in the summer. Red / Green / Yellow should readily available during July and August.

The export of sweet Potatoes from Israel was very limited in the early part for new harvesting season, with most products remaining in the home market. "Both Georgia-Jet and Buauregard varieties should still be available until March and the relatively low prices compared to previous season is creating some interest."
