Positive end to 2017 in terms of export volumes

Chile: Blueberry season update

The Chilean Blueberry committee has published reports on their exports. If we compare the export statistics of the beginning of this season 2017/2018 to the same weeks of the previous season 2016/2017, the total tonnage exported in November was much lower. However, from week 50 on this completely changed. As you can see from the graph below, during week 50 a total of 8.889 tons was exported compared to 8.019 tons during week 50 of the previous season. In week 51, a greater volume of 10.820 tons has been exported compared to 8.910 tons.

In the last update the committee has published, it is explained that in week 51 it was first expected to ship around 10.00 tons. However, this has been exceeded to a volume of 10.820 tons. “Of this total, 5,975 tons were destined to the USA (58.5%). This means that this volume will be arriving in week 1 in this market, however, this week already began an important arrival of around 4,000 tons, corresponding to shipments of week 50.”

It is mentioned that in week 50, Europe and the Far East were important import markets for the conventional fresh blueberries. The organic offer was mostly sent to the USA.

There is no update with actual statistics for week 52 yet, however, it was expected to be between 7.000 and 8.000 tons. This lower volume is due to the end-of-year holidays according to the Committee, which decreases the number of working days. Still, compared to the amount of 4.427 tons in week 52 in the previous season, it’s a big increase.
