Asia's love for Indian pomegranates

The pomegranate is a very popular fruit around the world. Its worldwide demand usually starts in December due to festive season, and lasts until the Chinese New year.

The production in India this year has been very good but exporters will not get big sales until the New Year’s season. According to Manish Sharma, Managing Director of Sia Impex, “Our Company’s volumes have consistently been high because of the contract farming and procurement from farmers. This allows us to supply to the domestic market as well as overseas."

"On the export side, we usually experience a very quiet season up until the second week of December. This is because customers typically save money before the New Year and also due to Chinese and Turkish pomegranates.

Pomegranate re-sellers are really different in their preference for the fruit. “Based on our experience we’ve seen that typically supermarkets purchase both fresh pomegranates and arils, while wholesalers don’t show any interest in our arils due to short shelf life," says Sharma.

Pomegranate’s pricing on the other hand is not really stable in India; a slight change in the price could be costly in a highly competitive industry, where competition could be found in all parts of the globe. “Usually prices don’t really go up. Exporters are able to get good prices through supermarkets but not through wholesalers."

Sia Impex’s main markets are Russia, Middle East and other Asian countries. “Other countries have shown interest in Asia, such as Vietnam and Cambodia, but either government policy or high tax rates have been a barrier for us.”

Given the company’s continued success in developing Asian markets, specifically markets that follow the Chinese New Year, the company is going in the right direction to further grow its business in the region.

Sia Impex also exports grapes and mangoes.
