Italy: The wholesale market needs new daytime entrepreneurs

"There is currently higher demand for excellent quality products and a lower demand for secondary class products. We mainly import from South Africa and mainly commercialise citrus fruit and lemons in particular with a total volume of approximately 4,000 pallets," reports Gruppo La California, a company specialising in logistics, packaging and commercialisation of fresh produce.

"We also procure fruit from Spain. The overall volume is 15,000 pallets, including citrus fruit, pears, Iceberg lettuce, stone fruit, medlars, chestnuts and peppers." As regards purchasing markets, the Group focuses a lot on Peruvian imports, while the target for sales were Arab countries.

La California's objective for 2017 was to achieve a 20% increase of the turnover in line with the results achieved during the previous 6 years. "The turnover increased by 15-20% thanks to the investments made with the northern Italy office and for production. We now want to improve our production and commercial organisation."

As regards the daytime opening of Centro agroalimentare di Napoli-CAAN, sales manager Giuseppe Galluccio reports that "it is the only solution to make the entire sector work, because we need young entrepreneurs and they are very difficult to find for the time slot between 1 and 8 am."

Galluccio had already said how he thought daytime opening was a good option due to the new facilities and the evolution of fresh produce over the past ten years. "First of all, it would improve the quality of life of people who currently work there. In addition, such change would lead to more clients, better services to all wholesale warehouses open only during the day and the employment of professional business management collaborators who are almost impossible to find with this opening times, despite the high level of unemployment in our country."
