Early season Egyptian oranges demand high price in China

“Egyptian oranges were allowed into China in 2014, the total exports to China in 2014, 2015 and 2016 were 6900 tons, 22000 tons and 33000 tons respectively, showing a steady growth trend. By October 2017 China had imported more than 100,000 tons of oranges from Egypt,” according to Na Chen from Zhengzhou Chen's Sun Fruit and Vegetable Trade Company said.

“The main reason why import of Egyptian orange increased in the past few years is the improved quality of packaging. The local packaging plant in Egypt has been working hard to improve its product quality on the basis of market feedback, so that the product can meet the needs of the Chinese market better,” explained Ms Chen.

“There are two varieties of Egyptian oranges that we import: sweet orange Navel and Valencia. Each year, the seasons run from January to May and from December to January respectively. Last year, we imported 160 containers of oranges from Egypt, in which Valencias accounted for the majority, although the taste of the Valencia is inferior to that of sweet orange, but it has a longer storage time. This year, we plan to import at least 300 containers of Egyptian oranges of high quality to China.”

“Being affected by climate, the new picking season of Egyptian orange will arrive earlier, in mid November. Taking into consideration that it's been a bumper year for China's domestic oranges, the output has increased significantly compared with previous years, the price has also risen thanks to strong market demand. At the beginning of the season, high price of Egyptian oranges do not give it a favourable position on the market, the sales volume won't be too large, later it is likely to increase, but overall, the total sales volume will be nearly the same as last year.”

"In order to ensure that every batch of oranges from Egypt meets our requirements, we have more than 10 business partners in Egypt, and these suppliers have their own orchards and packhouses. During the harvest season, our staff will go to the local packhouse and carry out on-site supervision."
