On 30 September, the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau announced that the first batch of Malaysian pineapples had arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The bureau had performed the first inspection of the produce, and after it had passed the inspections on pesticide residues and heavy metals, it was quickly brought to the public.
Since 2015, there has been some occasional news on Malaysian pineapples coming to China. On this year's Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation on 13 May, Zhi Shuping, chief of China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, signed the "Protocol on Transportation of Malaysian pineapples to China" with Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, head of the Malaysian Ministry of Agricultural and Agro-Based Industry, in order to open the road to China for Malaysian pineapples.
It is estimated that Malaysia will export 12,000 tons of pineapples to China in one year, with a value of 63,9 million yuan. Because of the increasing Chinese demand for pineapples, in 2020, Malaysia will export over 511 million yuan worth of pineapples to China.
